A Bright Reminder of Kindness at Terry Fox Elementary

May 25, 2026

A new mural at Terry Fox Elementary is bringing a little extra colour, joy and encouragement to the school community, thanks to UFV student teacher Ms. Stobbe.

Created during her practicum placement, the mural was designed to be bright, cheerful and meaningful for students and staff as they move through the school each day. For her, the message behind the artwork was just as important as the visual impact.

“I felt like something bright and cheery is a way to encourage people as they walk past,” said Ms. Stobbe. “Reminding people of kindness is important for elementary students as they learn to make friends and be with other peers.”

Ms. Stobbe completed a five-week practicum at Terry Fox Elementary in the fall and returned in February for a 10-week placement. Through both experiences, she has had the opportunity to learn alongside staff, build relationships with students and contribute to the life of the school in a lasting way.

Teaching has been a lifelong goal for Ms. Stobbe, who says she has wanted to become a teacher since she was six years old. She describes the profession as a meaningful way to work with children and make a positive impact in students’ lives.

“I love working with kids,” she said. “It’s a very fulfilling career path, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I’ve made positive connections with students.”

Her advice for other student teachers is simple: learn as much as possible and invest in the school community where you are placed.

Across the Abbotsford School District, approximately 50 practicum students are sponsored each school year, supporting future educators as they gain hands-on experience in classrooms. We look forward to working with her as a TOC.
