W.A. Fraser Middle Hosts Community Art Project to Honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

On May 5 and 6, 2025, students, staff, families, and community members gathered at W.A. Fraser Middle School for a powerful two-day art initiative honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). In collaboration with community partners, the team at W.A Fraser wanted to bring awareness to everyone about the current crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Indigenous women make up 16% of all homicide victims as well as 11% of missing women despite Indigenous women constituting 4.3% of the Canadian population (Assembly of First Nations, 2025).

Youth vaping

Vaping is popular among youth. Daily or near-daily use can increase the risk of mental and physical health harm.

In 2023, 26 per cent of youth in grades seven-12 in British Columbia reported having vaped. The most commonly reported age B.C. youth tried their first vape was 13.

Abbotsford Students Shine at Skills Canada BC Provincials

The Abbotsford School District is celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of ten students who represented Abbotsford at the Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition on April 16th.

After earning gold medals at the regional competition in February, these students advanced to the provincial stage, where they competed among the top trades and technology students in British Columbia. Throughout the competition, they demonstrated impressive technical skill, creativity, and professionalism.

Leadership Update - Secretary-Treasurer Ray Velestuk Departing, Interim Announced

After 15 years of dedicated service, Ray Velestuk, Secretary-Treasurer of the Abbotsford School District, will be departing the district this week to join the Surrey School District.

Throughout his tenure, Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk has been instrumental in stewarding the district’s finances with expertise and providing trusted leadership in operations and financial planning. His steady guidance has played a key role in supporting the district’s long-term goals and commitment to student success.
